Additional Specimen Instructions
Collect specimen first thing in the morning by applying sticky side of pinworm paddle to left and right perianal folds. Pin worm paddles can be obtained by calling the microbiology lab.
Patient should not bathe or go to bathroom prior to collection of specimen. Female worm migrates to perianal area to lay eggs at night.
Pinworm Paddle Collection (BD Falcon™ SWUBE™)
a. Remove the collection device from its outer packaging.
b. Pull off the cap from the plastic tube to remove the collection paddle.
c. Press the sticky side of the paddle firmly against the patient’s right and left perianal folds several times.
d. Return the paddle to the plastic collection tube for transport.
Cellulose Tape Specimen Collection
a. Cut off a length of clear cellulose tape (approximately 1 inch).
b. Loop the piece of tape back on itself with the sticky side out.
c. Hold the top of the loop securely with fingers. Press the sticky side of the cellulose tape firmly against the patient’s right and left perianal folds several times.
d. Place the tape into a clean, securely closed container for transport.
