Additional Specimen Instructions

Cathers should be cultured only when cather-related bloodstream infection is suspected. The submitted intravenous cather tip must be 2-7 cm long. A roll plate is done to give a semi-quantitative result. Only intravenous catheters are accepted for culture. Blood drawn from a peripheral site should also be cultured along with the catheter tip to aid in interpretation of results.
