Thrombosis Screen

Important Note

Orderable for Outpatients Only

eD-H Order Code

LAB3421

Specimen Transport Temperature

Sodium Citrate (Blue Top) Tubes: Double spin, separate, and freeze

Lavender EDTA tubes: Ambient

Gold SST Tubes: Refrigerate

Green Lithium Heparin Tube: spin within 1 hour, refrigerate, no need to pour off plasma if gel barrier is present

Additional Specimen Instructions

2.7 mL Sodium Citrate tube filled to the line

5.0 mL Gold SST

2.0 mL EDTA Lavender tube

4.5 mL Green LIHEP PST tube

Collect FOUR 2.7 mL blue top tubes

Note: All Specimen must be collected

Blue top tubes must be filled within 10% of stated volume. A discard tube must be used if a citrate tube is to be drawn using a winged blood collection set. It is important to remove air from the blood collection set to ensure the proper blood volume is obtained in the coag tube.

If the patient has a known hematocrit >55%, please contact the coagulation lab for an adjusted collection tube before drawing the blood.

Run platelet count (EDTA) and send result. If not run, send EDTA tube at room temp less than 24 hours old (refrigerated up to 36 hours)

Double spin, separate, freeze plasma from coag (blue) tubes

Refrigerate red cells from a lavender EDTA tube in a seperate tube if platelet count is completed. If EDTA tube is unavailable, red cells from the sodium citrate (blue) tube may be used

Refrigerate SST tube for ACA

Green Lithium Heparin Tube: spin within one hour, refrigerate, no need to pour off plasma if gel barrier is present.

If sending a Thrombosis Screen from outside of the DH-H network please complete the top portion of the Thrombosis Screen Worksheet and include it with the specimen. A link to the worksheet can be found under the Resources section on this page.

Additional Testing Information

The thrombosis screen is an interactive algorithm intended to initially draw all specimen that might be required for evaluation of a suspected hyper-coaguable state (thrombophilia). Initial screening testing will include a platelet count, prothrombin time (PT), partial thromboplastin time (PTT), fibrinogen, and thrombin time. Based on clinical information, history and medications, additional testing will be completed.

Tests that may be included are: activated protein C (APC) resistance screening (with factor V leiden mutation if abnormal), antithrombin (AT3), protein C, protein S, lupus anticoagulant panel, anticardiolipin antibodies, beta-2-glycoprotein-1 antibodies, homocysteine, and prothrombin G20210A mutation.

Results will be summarized in a Pathologists interpretive report, available in eD-H.
