Interpretive Data

Chloride Sweat

≤29 mmol/L: CF unlikely
30-59 mmol/L: intermediate
≥60 mmol/L: indicative of CF

In infants presenting with a positive newborn screening test and CFTR genotype demonstrating the presence of 2 CF-causing mutations, clinical features consistent with CF, or a positive family history, a single sweat chloride concentration of ≥ 60 mmol/L is sufficient to confirm the diagnosis. Individuals with a sweat chloride in the intermediate range (30 – 59 mmol/L) will need further study to establish or rule out a CF diagnosis.  A normal sweat chloride value (≤29 mmol/L) cannot be used as the sole criterion for exclusion of a CF diagnosis.
