Additional Specimen Instructions
Blue 1.8 mL Sodium Citrate filled to the line
OR
Blue 2.7 mL Sodium Citrate filled to the line
Blue top tubes must be filled within 10% of the stated volume. A discard tube must be used if a citrate tube is to be drawn using a winged blood collection set. It is important to remove air from the blood collection set to ensure the proper blood volume is obtained in the coag tube.
If needed, 1mL sodium citrate tubes can be prepared by the laboratory. These are a non-vacuum orange screw cap tube with lab prepared anticoagulant. To obtain some of these custom tubes please call the coagulation laboratory at 5-9463.
If the patient has a known hematocrit >55%, please contact the coagulation lab for an adjusted collection tube before drawing the blood.
Interpretive Data
Assay Display | Interpretive Data |
---|---|
INR | An INR <2.0 indicates adequate procoagulant activity for hemostasis in most patients without underlying bleeding disorders though the INR may not adequately reflect hemostatic capacity in patients with liver disease and synthetic impairment. The recommended target INR range for therapeutic anticoagulation is 2.0 – 3.0 for most applications though lower and higher ranges may be appropriate depending on clinical circumstances. |
PT | MHMH Transfusion Committee Guidelines: INR less than 2.0 PTT less than OR equal to 43.5 seconds or Fibrinogen greater than or equal to 100 mg/dl indicate adequate procoagulant activity for hemostasis in patients without underlying bleeding disorders. |
