Specimen Transport Temperature

Ambient or Refrigerated

Specimen Stability

Eswab: 48 hours, ambient or refrigerated

Sterile cup: 24 hours refirgerated

Additional Specimen Instructions

This test is for sterile body fluids (normally present in the body, excluding CSF, urine, and blood).

Send in E-swab if anaerobe culture is requested.
Cultures are held for 4 days.

VOLUME RECOMMENDATIONS (more volume increases the change of organism recovery):
Bacterial culture 1-5mL
Fungal culture >10mL
Anaerobe culture 1-5mL
Mycobacteria culture  >10mL

Collection Recommendations

  1. Clean the puncture site with disinfectant (ie. alcohol & iodine) to prevent contamination.
  2. Aseptically perofrm aspiration to obtain fluids.
  3. Remove air bubbles from the syringe and immediately place specimen into and E-swab (if anaerobic infection is suspected). A sterile cup/tube is acceptable for recovery of aerobic organisms only.
  4. For optimal sensitivity submit any additional fluid in a sterile container
