Additional Testing Information

Fine Needle Aspiration, Cytology

Specimen Collection (Non-Thyroid and Non-Salivary):
1. Label CytoLyt container with patient’s full name, and date of birth or MRN (if available). Indicate specimen source and location (left, right, 4R, left supraclavicular, etc.).
2. Express aspirated material into a Cytolyt container, rinse needle and syringe multiple times by drawing fluid back into syringe.
NOTE: Once the needle and syringe come in contact with Cytolyt solution, a new needle must be used for each additional pass.
3. Repeat aspiration at least three more times. Ensure cap is tightly sealed when transporting.
4. Complete Cytopathology Non-Gynecological requisition/order filling in all appropriate sections, indicating specimen site and include pertinent clinical data.
5. Refrigerate if there is a delay in sending specimen to the Laboratory. Send order/requisition with specimen to Lab Specimen Receiving (LSR), Borwell 4th floor.

NOTE: If there is concern for lymphoma or an abnormal hematopoietic process, collect material in RPMI and refrigerate. Contact flow cytometry for more information 603-650-7205.

Specimen Collection (Thyroid):
1. Label CytoLyt container with patient’s full name, and date of birth or MRN (if available) as well as specimen type and location (left, right, isthmus).
2. Express aspirated material into a Cytolyt container, rinse needle and syringe multiple times by drawing fluid back into syringe.
NOTE: Once the needle and syringe come in contact with Cytolyt solution, a new needle must be used for each additional pass.
3. Repeat aspiration at least three more times, ensure cap is tightly sealed when transporting.

Reflex Molecular Testing for Thyroid FNA (ThyroSeq):
1. Fill out requisition completely, including the signed patient consent form.
2. Collect an additional pass for molecular testing and express material directly into specified molecular vial.
3. Label container with patient’s full name and date of birth. Use the appropriate label found attached to the molecular testing requisition.
4. Send molecular vial on ice (if appropriate) with requisition and consent form to the Lab Specimen Receiving (LSR), Borwell 4.
(ThyroSeq: Off-site locations keep vial for molecular testing in freezer until pick-up).

Specimen Collection (Salivary Gland):
1. Place a drop of aspirated material on a glass slide (labeled with the patient’s full name and date of birth or MRN, on the frosted end with a No. 2 lead pencil).
2. Place second labeled slide on top of aspirated material and draw two slides apart holding on to both frosted areas, resulting with material on the top side of both slide.
3. Immediately fix one slide in a container of 95% ETOH or with cytology fixative spray. Allow the second slide to dry.
4. The number of slides prepared will depend on the amount of material aspirated and the areas sampled. Submit no more than 4 slides.
5. Express any residual material in the syringe and needle in a tube of Cytolyt solution, rinse needle and syringe multiple times by drawing fluid back into syringe.
NOTE: Once the needle and syringe come in contact with Cytolyt, a new needle and syringe must be used for additional passes.
6. Rinse any additional passes directly into Cytolyt. Ensure cap is tightly sealed while transporting.
7. Once slide has dried, place air-dried slide in secured mailer. Indicate that the slide is air-dried.
8. Label Cytoloyt container with two patient identifiers, including patient’s full name and date of birth, specimen source and laterality.
9. Complete Cytopathology Non-Gynecological requisition/order filling in all appropriate sections, indicating specimen site and include pertinent clinical data.
6. Refrigerate if there is a delay in sending specimen to the Laboratory. Send order/requisition with specimens (CytoLyt vial, air-dried slides and alcohol-fixed slides) to Lab Specimen Receiving (LSR), Borwell 4th floor.

Container: CytoLyt solution vial, 95% alcohol slide transport container and/or cardboard slide mailer for spray fixed or air-dried slides.

Label: Patient full name and date of birth or MRN (if available) as well as specimen type and laterality.

Requisition/Order: Cytopathology Non-Gynecological (form F-312) e-DH number LAB13.

Required pertinent information including: patient demographics; clinical history; complete specimen identification (type, source and laterality); collection date; tests or studies requested; providers name, location and number is required. Indicate if there is a known, suspected lesion or previous malignancy or any chemotherapy/radiation or surgical therapy.
