- Label container with patient's full name and date of birth or MRN (if available). Indicate specimen source.
- Specimens submitted in 10% neutral buffered formalin need to be fully submerged with the optimal approximate specimen volume of 10:1 or higher

Non-Lebanon Campus or Outreach Clients: Submit via courier to DHMC. Maintain specimen on wet ice.

Ordering Specimens
For eDH Users
POC for pathology examination: LAB1900, Surgical Pathology
- Send tissue fresh.
- If Special studies are indicated
- Footprints - Please note in comment. Pathology will forward to OB/5L.
- Cytogenetics and Molecular Pathology require additional orders.
POC that does not require pathology examination: LAB1906, OB Hold
Note: Samples submitted as an OB HOLD will be reviewed upon reciept in lab and if needed, the lab will request that the submitting provider order a LAB 1900 order for processing.
* Policy 2960 Placenta Pathology Procedure - BP - “Pathology examination of the placenta is ordered for all deliveries other than uncomplicated, term, singleton births (i.e. Apgars equal to or greater than 8 at five minutes; no fetal/neonatal, placental or cord abnormalities; newborn admitted to normal newborn nursery; no history of maternal complications).”

• Anatomic site and collection date
• Brief patient history
Send tissue fresh if special studies (cytogenetics and/or molecular pathology) are indicated. Otherwise tissue may be sent in 10% neutral buffered formalin.
